Near the Somme

The translation given with this card was "Here we have been during the Somme battle. At the right and the left marching columns. Near the Somme." The Germans were at this location long enough to warrant placing sandbags around all of the tents. The near column is a supply train while the soldiers march in the far one.

The translation I was provided with this card is "Here we have been during the Somme battle. At the right and the left marching columns. Near the Somme.". The lack of leaves on the trees would suggest that this was taken late in 1916 towards the end of the battle.

German soldiers bivouacking in the Somme region. This could have been in the early stages of the war before the trenches were dug.

221st Infantry Division

A group from the 221st Infantry Division in what looks like a New Years celebration. If so they would have been just south of the Somme. They spent the winter of 1916-17 in the line near Berny-en-Santerre.

Breteuil near Montdidier

A damaged hospital train in Breteuil, France. About 30 miles from the front at the time of the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The Germans did capture Montdidier in June of 1918 about 13 miles away. They held on to it until August when a combine Allied assault retook it.
