Aerial Photography

Two German photographs showing aerial views of the battlefield. The top shows two very faint trench lines. Soldiers can be seen in the trenches as well as in the area between them. The bottom pictures the remains of a building in a heavily shelled area. It is not clear if there are soldiers among the ruins.

300 Meters From the Frenchmen

A frontline German trench. If the note on the back is to be believed it is only 300 meters to the opposing French trench.

Trench Ladders

Four German soldiers carrying short makeshift ladders through a shallow trench. It must have been a very secure area to allow the photographer to set up on a high point to take this picture.

Tranchée No. 1

Four German officers posing in a trench. The one in the leather coat holds a sign that says Tranchée No. 1. Perhaps this is a trench they captured from the French.

This is a well appointed German trench. It has its own kitchen. The sign above the doorway appears to read "Stausküche 6".

This appears to be a practice trench. Nobody is wearing a helmet and there are plenty of footprints all around.

Trench at Riga

A well maintained trench in a quiet sector at Riga. Too many trees left standing for it to have been an area in Russian artillery range. It also seems shallow as the soldier head is right at the top of the trench.

French Trench

A French trench that has been captured by the Germans. A pair of Sanitätsmannschaften can be seen by the remains of the building.

Water Pump

One soldier chose to remember his time in the trenches with this photograph of a water pump.
